NCAHF first learned of Hulda Regehr Clark's book, The Cure of All Cancers (ProMotion Publishing, 1993) from an investigative journalist. He stated that Clark's book was self-published and was being sold by her son out of the trunk of his car mostly to health food stores up and down the Pacific coast. Clark's claims are simple and straightforward. On page one she states:
All cancers are alike. They are all caused by a single parasite. It is the human intestinal fluke. And if you kill this parasite, the cancer stops immediately. The tissue becomes normal again. In order to get cancer, you must have this parasite.
The "cure" (page 10) is just as simple and straightforward:
She goes on to claim that three herbs will kill the parasite: black walnut hulls (from the black walnut tree); wormwood (from the Artemesia shrub); and common cloves (from the clove tree -- these must be freshly ground from whole cloves). Black walnut hulls and wormwood kill the adult flukes, and cloves kill the eggs, says Clark. They must be used as a single treatment.
Does this sound crazy? You bet it does! Scientists have been studying parasitic disorders for many years and have made no connections to cancer. A leading expert on the parasite Clark claims is the cancer culprit, Ken Mott, MD, MPH, Chief Schistosomiasis, Division of Control of Tropical Diseases, World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland, says that the human intestinal fluke is not native to the United States. How, then, could it cause cancers here?
Scientists have unlocked much of cancer's causation. It involves genetics + "initiator" + "promoter + time. Genetic susceptibility involves an oncogene and/or damaged suppressor gene. Initiators include UV light, x-rays, hormones, misc. chemical (natural or synthetic), viruses, and more. Promoters include hormones, misc. chemicals natural and synthetic, and more. Over time, unless the tumor runs out of some vital factor to keep it dividing, a clinical tumor. When a tumor reaches 1,000,000 cells it needs it own blood supply. At 1,000,000,000 cells it is detectable by x-ray; at 10,000,000,000 cells it can be felt by hand; death generally occurs when a tumor reaches 1,000,000,000,000 cells. The fastest growing cancer doubles cells every 36 days and takes 3 1/2 years to kill. Cancer of the colon doubles cells every 110 days and takes ten years to kill. Dormancy and remission can occur, which explains why individual survival time is unpredictable.
Is Clark's "treatment" worth a try? Are these substances safe? Limited information on black walnut hulls states that it is "a powerful remedy for expelling worms," (Naturopathic Handbook of Herbal Remedies), but NCAHF has little confidence in naturopathic resources. Wormwood and cloves are better documented. According to the Lawrence Review of Natural Products (4/91), the FDA has classified wormwood as an unsafe herb. Wormwood and its extracts have been used traditionally in the treatment of worm infections and as flavoring agents. Clove is primarily a flavoring agent, but a 15% tincture is effective against ringworm (ringworm is a fungus, not a worm or parasite). It seems simple enough to try Clark's crank concoction for a short time just to satisfy one's curiosity. However, once a person steps into the ring with nutty pseudomedicine, it can become like hitting the tarbaby in Uncle Remus tales -- the more you do it, the deeper you can get stuck. NCAHF's advice is to ignore this kind of nonsense.
Clark was charged with practicing medicine without a license in Brown County, Indiana in 1993. The charges stem from an undercover investigation by the Indiana Attorney General's Office and the state Department of Health . Clark was arrested Sept 20, 1999 by the FBI in California . The judge dismissed the case against Clark ruling that too much time had passed from when Clark practiced medicine without a license and was charged and prosecuted, thus denying her the right to a speedy trial . The judge seems to have been oblivious of the fact that Clark continues to practice medicine without a license by prescribing cures for AIDS, cancer, and other serious problems in her books The Cure for All Cancers, The Cure for HIV and AIDS, and The Cure for All Diseases.
